The four-fold qualifications (verses 18-30)

Slokam - 19 :  (What are the Four Means?)

"Aadau nitya-anitya vastu vivekah pariganyate, 

iha amutra phala bhoga viraagah tadanantaram; 

shamaadi shhatka sampattih mumukshhutvam iti sphutam."

Translation : 1.

aadau nitya-anitya vastu vivekah pariganyate;     =  First comes the Discrimination between the Real and the unreal;

iha amutra phala bhoga viraagah tadanantaram;  =  here and hereafter, from the enjoyment of fruits of actions, to have a spirit of Detachment; after that

shamaadi shhatka sampattih                             =  the Sixfold Virtues such as Sama, Dama, etc; and

mumukshhutvam iti sphutam.                           =  lastly, a burning Desire for liberation. This is clear.

Translation :2.

Aadau   =  In the beginning, first;

nitya anitya vastu viveka  =  discrimination between the Real and the Unreal; 

parigaõyate   =  is counted; 

iha amutra phalabhoga viraagah   =  freedom from desires for the enjoyment of the fruits of actions here and hereafter (iha and amutra); 

tadanantaram   =  after that;

samadistaka sampattih =  the six great qualifications like calmness etc;

mumuksutvam  =  burning desire for liberation;

iti  =  thus indeed;

sphutam  =  clear

Tatvam (Essence) :

"While enumerating the qualifications), first we count the ability to discriminate between the Real and the unreal; next comes a spirit of detachment from the enjoyment of the fruits of actions here and hereafter; after that is the groups of six virtues beginning with calmness; and the last is undoubtedly an intense desire for liberation."
